As advertising moves more and more digital, new mediums are being developed to help shape the future of the industry. The next major step in the furthering of digital advertising lies in the emergence of virtual reality. The Oculus Rift is at the forefront of the VR movement with development kits already available for purchase. While the official release date is expected to be in the first quarter of 2016, headsets can already be purchased and used from the Oculus website.
Virtual reality, augmented reality (such as Google Glass), and mixed reality have already been identified as a new frontier for clients as companies are anticipating and preparing for these new devices to reach a massive audience. The truly interesting aspect of this new advertising movement is just how creative digital agencies are getting with this new medium. For example, Sapient Nitro plans to release immersive VR shopping experiences in efforts to help boost e-commerce.
With so much innovation coming out of one medium, the question lies in what’s next? Five years ago, this type of advertising wasn’t even a thought. Five years from now there will be something totally new, and it will be up to creative and digital agencies to find out how to utilize them.
