It's comes as no surprise that in our society today social media is one of the best ways to connect with your audience and gain traction for your business. However, it is important to utilize these tools in the right way in order for them to have a positive impact. Creating a social media strategy is the best way to plan out how exactly you want to use these platforms and how to do it successfully. We put together some of the top tips to consider when creating your social media strategy in order to use each platform to its full potential for your business. 

 

Be S.M.A.R.T. Set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Know what you want to achieve and how your social media strategy will help you meet your overall business objectives. Make sure the goals you set can be measured so you can see if you were successful, but more importantly only set goals that are practical and attainable. If you are just starting your social media channels don’t be expecting 1,000 followers in a day, instead set realistic goals that will still be a challenge to obtain.

 

Create a clean profile. Make sure your business profiles are in line with the image you want your company to portray. Use similar profile photos across all social platforms and make sure they are sized correctly. Fill out all information, include links to your website and know how you plan to use each social media platform. In addition, choose a hashtag or a series of hashtags that are unique to your business to incorporate in every post, especially when using Twitter and Instagram so your content can get to new eyes who may not already follow your business.

 

 Know your audience. Know who you’re posting for, create content that your audience will find the most compelling. Learn what gets the most engagement whether it be pictures, videos, or contests, and plan your strategy around what works best.

 

 Research your competition. Know who you are up against and check out their profiles to see what might be working for them. Get inspiration and use it to plan your strategy but make sure not to steal ideas, create your own original content to bring in your audience. There is no point in creating a copycat business, your unique ideas will be what makes your social media stand out from the crowd. 

 

Create engaging content. When promoting a business through social media it’s about quality not quantity. Although we live in a very social media centric society, people don’t want their feeds flooded with promotional content and chances are they’ll unfollow you if that’s the case. Find the sweet spot, be consistent with posting but make sure when you do it’s engaging content like a video, contest, or user generated content. Another important thing to remember is the time of day you post, the best time is mid-day during the week, and this can be just as important to your engagement as the content you’re posting. 

 

 Continue to evaluate and adjust. Finding the right strategy is trial and error, you have to test out different strategies to find what works best for your audience, budget and business. Be sure to constantly evaluate your work, note what is successful and what is not and adjust accordingly.
